Smack!

Just found out that USA Cycling dissed me on the MTB worlds team. WTF? I guess they are only taking the guys who are on the Olympic long team, and even though I beat 3-4 out of the 6 riders, maybe even 5, at all the races we have competed in this year, I am deemed "not good enough" for a top 10 placing, and apparently the other guys are. No disrespect to the other riders though. They are all great riders and deserve to go, but I dont feel like it was necessary for USA Cyling to name only 6 riders to the team when there are 7 spots at worlds for the elite men. Its not like I am taking anything away from anyone else. i just want a chance. Apparently that is too much to ask for. Now all the training and building up I have been doing for worlds is a bust. I guess all I can do now is roll my frustrations into a ball and throw it as hard as I can at Nationals and the Candian world cup rounds. I am bummed.

Sorry to read that. After your Euro trip, I thought it was clear you would be strong in international competition. Maybe they have some formula they're using for bias-free selection? Probably makes the 61st place even harder to swallow, too. Can you not call USA Cycling and ask why you didn't get selected? I would think asking for an explanation would not be inappropriate.

It all boils down to a selection comittee who doesnt really follow mtb events closley. Mark Gullikson is on the committee and he was supporting me, but was over ruled by all the others just based on the numbers I was putting up. Since I didnt win any domestic events out right and didnt have any top 25 finishes internationally, I got the boot. It is hard to take because obviously if you interprit the results I have had this seaosn from a perspective inside the sport I would be a no brainer to go, but that isnt how the selection comitte works. Beaucracy at its best! !

What a bunch of shit. I wonder if this would happen to any of the other guys and what would happen if it was one of them.

Ah hell that effing blows man...

as sh!tty as it is, find the silver lining for cross? maybe this is gonna mean you'll kick more ass in the fall/winter?

Maybe you're just too tall, it would really mess up the team photo. After all, image is everything.

You've come a long ways since the early days. I remember when you used to race with those yellow "cootie" sunglasses, circa 98-99? Maybe 16 years old? As I recall, you won a triathlon the next day after kicking my butt at Klamath Heat. I remember thinking on that day that I am NOT the real deal, but you were. I am certain that this is not your last opportunity to have a breakthrough, though certainly frustrating and rightfully so to feel angry. Keep at it Barry and know that you've inspired many of us, not only by your athletic performances, but by your positive, humble, down to earth attitude. Looking forward to seeing the lemonade that you'll make out of it. I'm sure it will taste sweet.

That rots. As a consolation, you are qualified for the Semi-Pro race at Natz!http://www.usacycling.org/events/2008/mtbnationals/qual_list.php?disc=XC&sex=M&cat=SM&age=1-99
USA Cycling at its best.
